1. AFTER 26 YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE, WARRANT OFFICER
TARA LYNN HURLEY (SKINNER) WILL BE RETIRING FROM THE CAF ON 21 AUGUST 2023 2. FOLLOWING IN MANY OF THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS DEVOTION TO SERVE WITHIN THE CAF, WO HURLEY ENROLLED IN THE CAF ON 16 JULY 1997 IN CORNER BROOK, NL. UPON COMPLETION OF THEIR BASIC TRAINING IN SAINT JEAN SUR RICHELIEU, QC, THEY WERE SENT TO CFB SHILO, MB TO FURTHER THEIR TRAINING AS A FIELD ARTILLLERYMAN AT THE ROYAL CANADIAN BATTLE
SCHOOL. DURING A FIELD TRAINING EXERCISE AND THEIR SENTRY DUTY, AFTER FALLING INTO A DEEP WATER PIT, THEY QUICKLY LEARNED THE IMPORTANCE OF ALWAYS HAVING SPARE DRY KIT. MORE IMPORTANTLY, DURING THEIR FIRST TRAINING ATTEMPT AT THROWING A GRENADE, THEY LEARNED A GRENADE MUST BE THROWN OVER THE WALL, NOT AT THE WALL. AFTER THEIR BATTLE SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR QUICKLY REMOVED THEM FROM THE SITUATION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY FOR BOTH OF THEM, WO HURLEY S INSTRUCTOR ORDERED THEM TO PRACTICE THROWING ROCKS IN THE FIELD PRIOR TO BEING CALLED UPON AGAIN TO THROW ANOTHER GRENADE. DONT WORRY, THEY WAS WELL DISCIPLINED AFTER
THE HORRENDOUS MISTAKE AND THEY NEVER MADE THAT SAME MISTAKE TWICE UPON COMPLETION OF QL3 TRAINING, THEY REMAINED AT CFB SHILO AND
BECAME A MEMBER WITHIN 1 ROYAL CANADIAN HORSE ARTILLERY, C BATTERY. WO HURLEY DID NOT FORGET THE WELCOMING FOR NEW GUNNERS TO 1RCHA. THE
ORDER FROM THE 2IC WAS GIVEN. THEY WAS TOLD TO WALK THE BATTERY LINES REQUESTING TO FIND A BLANK FIRING ATTACHMENT (BFA) FOR THE 105MM HOWITZER. AFTER WALKING THE LINES REQUESTING A BFA FOR THE 105MM HOWITZER FROM VARIOUS SUPPLY QUARTER MASTERS, AND CONTINUOUSLY TOLD TO GO TO OTHER LOCATIONS TO CHECK, THEY QUICKLY REALIZED THIS WAS THE GUNNERS WELCOME TO THE REGIMENT, AS A 105MM HOWITZER BFA DOES NOT EXIST DURING THEIR TIME POSTED TO 1RCHA, THEY HAD GAINED MANY
POSITIVE
EXPERIENCES. THEY WERE EMPLOYED AS A GUN DET MBR WITH THE 105 MM LG1 HOWITZER, TRAINED AS A MOTAR DET MBR ON THE 81MM MOTAR, A COMBAT STORESMAN, AVGP DRIVER, ARTILLERY COMMUNICATOR, ARTILLERY COMMAND POST TECHNICIAN WHICH ALL INVOLVED MANY FIELD EXERCISES, STAND-TO AND BOOTS ON THE GROUND. THEY ALSO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PERFORM ON THE C1 105MM HOWITZER WITH THE GUN DET DURING THEIR TIME EMPLOYED FOR AVALANCHE CONTROL IN ROGERS PASS, BC. HOOAH. FROM 21 FEB 2000 TO 16
SEP 2000, THEY WERE DEPLOYED TO BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA WITH THE TFBH INFANTRY BATTALION GROUP FOR SEVEN MONTHS. DURING THIS DEPLOYMENT THEY PATROLLED, WAS TASKED WITH QUICK REACTION FORCE AND GATE GUARD DUTY WITH THEIR GUN DET COMRADES, 2IC AND IC BY THEIR SIDE
DURING THEIR TIME SERVED WITHIN 1RCHA, THEY HAD LEARNED TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF DISCIPLINE, RESPECT AND COMARADERY. THEY ARE
THANKFUL TO HAVE SERVED WITH MANY RESPECTED SIBLINGS IN ARMS. TO THE GUN DET MEMBERS THEY HAD WORKED ALONGSIDE WITH AND ESPECIALLY DURING DEPLOYMENT TO BOSNIA, THEY SINCERELY THANK YOU FOR HAVING THEIR SIX AND GIVING THEM THAT EXTRA PUSH WHEN NEEDED. UBIQUE. ALTHOUGH THE
EXPERIENCE AS A GUNNER WAS VERY REWARDING, THEY REALLY ENJOYED WHEN ASKED TO ASSIST THE BTY CLERKS WITH ADMINISTRATION AND AFTER WORKING IN THE OFFICE WITH THE BTY CLERKS ENTERING LEAVE PASSES, BUILDING TRACKING EXCEL SPREADSHEETS AND LEARNING LTA CLAIMS, IN APRIL OF 2005 THEY DECIDED TO OCCUPATIONAL TRANSFER TO RMS CLK
3. WO HURLEY COMPLETED RMS CLK QL3 TRAINING AT CFB BORDEN, ON AT CANADIAN FORCES LOGISTICS TRAINING CENTRE IN JUNE 2005. UPON
GRADUATION THEY WERE POSTED TO THE CFLTC STAFF ORDERLY ROOM. IN JULY 2007 THEY WERE PROMOTED TO MCPL AND POSTED TO THE CFLTC STUDENT ORDERLY ROOM AS THE 2IC ADMINISTERING MANY QL3 COURSE STUDENT FILES. IN AUGUST 2008 UNTIL MARCH 2009, THEY WERE ATTACHED POSTED TO 5
SERVICE BATTALION IN VALCARTIER, QC FOR PRE DEPLOYMENT TRAINING WITH JOINT TASK FORCE AFGHANISTAN NATIONAL SUPPORT ELEMENT. IN MARCH 2009 UNTIL OCTOBER 2009 THEY WERE DEPLOYED TO KABUL, AFGHANISTAN AS THE
2IC CLK. UPON RETURN FROM DEPLOYMENT, THEY CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT WITHIN CFLTC AND MOVED INTERNALLY AS AN RMS CLK INSTRUCTOR IN JANUARY 2010. WO HURLEY FELT INSTRUCTING AND BEING INVOLVED AS A COURSE DIRECTOR FOR RMS QL3 STUDENTS WAS ONE OF THE MOST REWARDING EXPERIENCES WITHIN THEIR CAREER. THEY TOOK MUCH PRIDE IN ASSISTING STUDENTS AND ENJOYED EVERY SECOND IN THE CLASSROOM. THEY HAD WORKED ALONGSIDE AND MET MANY MORE COMRADES WITHIN CFLTC AND ALSO DURING
DEPLOYMENT IN KABUL, AFGHANISTAN WHO STILL TODAY, HOLDS MUCH RESPECT FOR AND STILL REMEMBERS
4. IN JUNE 2011 WO HURLEY WAS PROMOTED TO SGT AND EMPLOYED WITHIN THE HEAD CASHIER POSITION AT CFB BORDEN FOR ONE YEAR. IN JULY 2012 WO HURLEY WAS POSTED TO TECH SVCS IN THE CHIEF CLERK POSITION WHERE THEY
GAINED MUCH MORE EXPERIENCE WITHIN THE POSITION AND TRADE, AS WELL AS WITHIN THE A/ADJT POSITION DURING THE ADJT ABSENCE. IN JUNE 2013,
THEY WERE POSTED TO CFB GAGETOWN, NB AS THE IC FOR CELL 1 WITHIN THE PAY OFFICE. FROM THERE, IN JULY 2014 THEY WERE EMPLOYED WITHIN 5 CDSB GAGETOWN WORKING BETWEEN HQ AND SUPPLY COMPANY AS THE HQ AND COY CHIEF CLERK (CC) WHILE AWAITING THE ARRIVAL OF THE NEW INCOMING CC. UPON ARRIVAL OF THE NEW INCOMING CC, WO HURLEY CONTINUED TO HOLD THE
POSITION OF THE 5 CDSB GAGETOWN SUP COY CC FROM JULY 2015 TO JULY 2016
5. IN JULY 2016, THEY WERE PROMOTED TO WO AND POSTED TO 4 ENGINEER
SUPPORT REGIMENT AS THE REGT CC/HR MANAGER FOR A TWO YEAR POSTING.
RETURNING TO A HIGH READINESS ENGINEER UNIT, PROVIDING ADMIN SUPPORT,
WO HURLEY HAD LEARNED TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE DEPTH AND SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE DIFFERENT SQUADRON ROLES KNOWING THEY WERE PREPARED TO MEET
THE DEMANDS OF A DOMESTIC AND EXPEDITIONARY CRISIS RESPONSE. THEY HAD
PARTICIPATED IN AND PROVIDED ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT TO EX NIHILO
SAPPER. AN EXERCISE DESIGNED TO ENSURE THE ENGINEERING REGIMENT CAN
RAPIDLY PROVIDE ENGINEERING SUPPORT TO HUMANITARIAN RELIEF EFFORTS
AND COMBAT MISSIONS AT HOME AND ABROAD. THEY REMEMBER BEING EMPLOYED
WITHIN A FIELD EXERCISE WHEN 43 COUNTER IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE
(C-IED) SQUADRON MEMBERS HAD ALLOWED WO HURLEY TO RIDE WITH THEM TO OBSERVE THEIR COUNTER IED TRAINING. WO HURLEY ALSO OBSERVED THE EXPEDIENT ROUTE OPENING CAPABILITY (EROC) TRAINING FOR DEPLOYMENT PURPOSES. THEY FELT HONOURED TO HAVE HAD THE EXPEREINCE TO HAVE
SERVED WITH 4ESR LEADERSHIP AND ITS MEMBERS, AND AS WELL AS WITH THE
REGIMENTAL ORDERLY ROOM STAFF WHO WORKED WITH WO HURLEY DURING HIGH
READINESS TIMES. RESPECT, CHIMO
6. FROM JULY 2018 TO AUGUST 2020, WO HURLEY WAS POSTED TO CAF
TRANSITION UNIT GAGETOWN, FORMALLY KNOWN AS JPSU DET GAGETOWN IN THE HR MANAGER POSITION. DURING THIS TIME, WO HURLEY ADMINISTERED CASUALTY ADMIN INCLUDING THE CLAIM PROCESSES ASSISTING THE
DESIGNATING ASSISTANT AND NOK. DURING THEIR TIME EMPLOYED WITH TU GAGETOWN, THEY WERE ALSO EMPLOYED AS A BOARD OF INQUIRY MEMBER FOR 9 MONTHS. IN AUG 2020 WO HURLEY WAS POSTED TO THEIR FIRST AIR FORCE
BASE, CFB GANDER IN THE SUPT CLK POSITION AND HR MANAGER FOR 9 WING
7. WITH A SUCCESSFUL AND SATISFYING CAREER AND LEARNING THROUGH MANY
EXPERIENCES, WO HURLEY SENDS A BIG HEART FELT THANK YOU TO ALL OF
THEIR MENTORS THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREER. THEY HAVE HAD THE HONOUR TO
HAVE MET MANY CIVILIAN AND UNIFORMED MEMBERS WHO HAD DISPLAYED
COMRADERY AND ALSO THE I GOT YOUR SIX MENTALITY. WO HURLEY WISHES TO
THANK ALL OF THEIR PEERS THAT THEY HAD THE PRIVILEDGE TO TRAIN WITH,
THEIR SUBORDINATES WHO HAD WORKED WITH THEM, THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREER,
AS WITHOUT ALL OF THEM, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE SUCCEEDED AS WELL. IN THE PAST, WO HURLEY HAS BEEN CALLED THE HEART OF AN ORDERLY ROOM. A VERY
MODEST INDIVIDUAL, THEIR EMPATHY AND COMPASSION SHOWN TOWARDS OTHERS,
IN AND OUT OF UNIFORM AND HARD WORK ETHICS AFTER 26 YEARS OF SERVICE, HAD ENSURED THEM A REWARDING CAREER AND ONE THEY WILL NEVER FORGET. WO HURLEY IS NOW CLOSING THIS CHAPTER AND WILL REMAIN IN APPLETON, NL
WITH THEIR HUSBAND KEVIN TAKING TIME AT FIRST FOR A MORE RELAXED LIFESTYLE, ENJOYING GARDENING, NATURE HIKES, AND SPENDING TIME AT THE CABIN
