WO Rick Potvin
WO Rick Potvin is a native of the Outaouais region and joined the CAF on September 17, 1981 as a gunner. After successfully completing basic recruit training in St-Jean, Qc, he was transferred to the Valcartier garrison where he completed his QL 3 course with the 5th Light Artillery Regiment of Canada. During this first assignment, he served with the anti-aircraft artillery battery (Victor) on the 40 mm Boffin guns and in the air defence missile section called Blowpipe until the end of his contract in September 1984 when he leaves the CAF.
Two and a half years later, he enrolled as an OP MMS in Feb. 1987. He was transferred to CFB Uplands and employed as a driver in various sections as well as chief dispatcher.
In 1993, he was transferred to 5 Svc Bns trsp pon in Valcartier, and was employed in the maintenance, supply, and cargo section and finished section cmdt. He participated in OP Verglas in 1998, and deployed to the former Yugoslavia, Croatia 1995, Bosnia 96-97 and 1999-2000.
In 2001, he was transferred to the 5 Field Ambulance as MCpl in trsp pon. He was employed as an instructor on the driver courses and as a unit hazardous materials officer. In addition, he was deployed on OP Athena in 2004.
In 2006, he was promoted to Sgt and transferred to the CFLRS. He was employed as an instructor and as his section cmdt of trsp pon from 2008-2009. In 2009, he was selected to be promoted to WO and transfer to Valcartier for deployment to Afghanistan. He declined this offer and left the regular force after 25 years of service to join the reserve.
Still at CFLRS in 2009, he was selected to be promoted to the rank of WO and posted to Valcartier in the 5th C Service Battalion at Trsp Co. to be redeployed to Afghanistan. He declined the offer and then left the CF after 25 years of regular service to join the reserve.
In September 2009, he joined 34 Svc Bns as a reservist where he was employed as an instructor on driver courses, section cmdt, road safety rep and acted as a trsp officer. With his team, he supported 34 GBC in their exercises and major deployment such as in the United States (North Carolina and Virginia and for James Bay.
In January 2013, he applied for a position at 2 GPRC in St-Jean as an instructor for the Canadian Rangers in northern Quebec. Given his experience, WO Potvin was the first (log) driver to win a contract and deploy as a patrol assistant to 43 Rangers who were leaving for EX Guerrier Nordique 2013. He went for a visited many different villages in the Northern part of Quebec to give First Aid courses, map and compass, how to make an improvised landing strip in desert environments, search and rescue and communication courses for natives.
In 2014, he returned to the regular force and was employed at the CFLRS once again. He worked as an instructor on the new Canadian Forces Indigenous Enrollment Program (CFAEP), as an instructor in the standards division and in the General Military Training Instructor (IFMG) section for incoming instructors. He was then transferred to the Distance Learning (AD) division to redo lesson plans for the IFMG course and the Basic Leadership Qualification (QEL) course. In December 2015 he was promoted to the rank of WO.
July 2016 to June 2019, he was affected as trsp pon 2 I/C for Montreal and St-Jean in Tech Svcs. During this time, he was employed as an advisor during OP Lentus in 2017 (floods) for the logistical support at the trsp level. In addition, he acted as the pon cmdt for a period of 18 months.
For the six months of his career from August 2019 to February 2020, he participated in the professional rehabilitation program for service members in service (PRPMAS) of the Canadian Forces, by following professional training as a photographer with the multimedia team of the CFLRS.
February 15, 2020 will be WO Potvin’s last day in the CAF. He will remain in the St-Jean sur Richelieu region and plans to continue in the field of photography with his spouse and daughters, more specifically as a photographer for weddings, graduation parties, etc.
L’adj Rick Potvin est natif de l’Outaouais et a joint les FAC le 17 sept 1981 en tant qu’artilleur. Après avoir complété avec succès l’entraînement de base des recrues à St-Jean, Qc, il fut muté à la garnison Valcartier ou il a complété son cours QL 3 avec le 5e Régiment Artillerie Légère du Canada. Deux années et demie après, il s’est enrôlé comme OP MMS en févr.1987. Il fut muté à CFB Uplands et employé comme chauffeur dans diverses sections ainsi que chef répartiteur.
En 1993, il est muté à Valcartier au 5e Bns du C au pon trsp, et employé aux sections liaison maintenance, ravitaillement, camion-remorque pour finir au pon A à titre de chef de section. Il a participé à l’OP Verglas en 1998, et déployé en Ex-Yougoslavie, Croatie 1995, Bosnie 96-97 et 1999-2000.
En 2001, il fut muté au 5e Ambulances de Campagne comme Cplc au pon trsp. Il fut employé à titre instructeur sur les cours de chauffeur et à titre (OMDU) officier des matières dangereuses de l’unité. De plus, il a été déployé en 2004 sur OP Athena.
En 2006, il est promu à Sgt, il fut muté à l’ELRFC. Il fut employé à titre instructeur sur les pons et ensuite comme cmdt son au trsp de l’ELRFC de 2008-2009. En 2009, il est sélectionné pour être promu Adj et muté à Valcartier pour être déployé en Afghanistan, il décline l’offre et quitte la force régulière après 25 ans de svc pour se joindre à la réserve.
En septembre 2009, il joint le 34 Bns comme réserviste. Pendant son mandat il fut employé comme instructeur sur les cours de chauffeurs, cmdt de son, rep sécurité routière et agit comme officier de trsp. Avec son équipe, il a supporté le 34 GBC dans leurs exercices et déploiements majeurs tel que, aux États-Unis. Il préparait la flotte de véhicules des exercices comme pour la Baie-James, la Caroline du Nord et la Virginie.
En janvier 2013, il applique pour un poste au 2 GPRC à St-Jean en tant qu’instructeur pour les Rangers Canadiens dans le nord du Québec. Vu son expérience, l’adj Potvin a été le premier (log) chauffeur a gagné le concours et déploie comme adjoint de patrouille du 43 Rangers qui
partait de pour l’EX Guerrier Nordique 2013. Il s’est promené dans différent village dans le Nord-du-Québec afin de donner des cours de Premiers Soins, carte et boussoles, comment fabriqué une piste d’atterrissage improvisé en milieux désertiques, cours de recherche et sauvetage et de communication aux autochtones.
En 2014, il retourne dans la force régulière et est employé de nouveau à l’ELRFC. Il a travaillé comme instructeur sur le nouveau programme d’enrôlement des Autochtones des Forces canadiennes (PEAFC), instructeur à la division des normes et à la section Instructeur de formation militaire générale (IFMG) comme instructeur des nouveaux arrivants. Ensuite, il fut transféré à la division (AD) l’apprentissage à distance afin de refaire des nouveaux plans de leçon pour le cours d’IFMG et le cours Qualification élémentaire en leadership (QEL). En décembre 2015 il a été promu au grade d’adj.
En juillet 2016, il fut muté au Svc Tech à titre de cmdt-a du pon trsp Mtl-St-J jusqu’en juin 2019. Durant son affectation, il fut employé comme aviseur lors de l’OP Lentus en 2017 (inondations) pour le support logistique au niveau du trsp. De plus, il a agi à titre de cmdt de pon pour une période de 18 mois.
Pour les derniers 6 mois de sa carrière d’août 2019 à février 2020, il a participé au programme de réadaptation de professionnelle à l’intention des militaires en activité de service (PRPMAS) des Forces Canadiennes. En suivant une formation professionnelle à titre de photographe avec l’équipe multimédia de l’ELRFC.
Le 15 février 2020 sera la dernière journée de l’adj Potvin dans les FAC. Il restera dans la région de St-Jean-sur-le-Richelieu et envisage de continuer dans le domaine de la photographie avec sa conjointe et ses filles, plus particulièrement à titre de photographe pour les mariages, bal de finissants, etc.
