WO HARDEN, 00169, AMMO TECH
Well, it is time for WO Dave Harden to retire from the CAF.
Dave joined as a Combat Engineer on 17 October 1994 in Calgary and immediately went to St. Jean, PQ to do his basic training on the second English course to be run there after the closing of Cornwallis. Upon graduation from basic, he was posted to Chilliwack, BC to do his 3’s and subsequent posting to 1 CER. When Chilliwack was closed in the summer of 1996, he was posted to Edmonton for his first posting to Alberta.
While posted to Edmonton, Dave deployed on OP PALLADIUM Roto 1 in Bosnia with the LDSH (RC) from July 1997 to January 1998, prior to which he was sent to Manitoba to fight the Flood of the Century during the work-up training. He took part in fighting the forest fire near Salmon Arm, BC in August 1998 and later that year was on the first Combat Engineer 5’s to take place in Gagetown after the Engineer School moved (also as a result of the Chilliwack closure). Dave then went to Bosnia for a second time, this time on Roto 6 with 3VP from February to September 2000. It was during this tour when he finally saw the light and submitted his OT to Ammo Tech (he would still get to blow stuff up and there would be no more building bridges).
In April 2002, after being accepted into the Ammo Tech trade, he was posted to the EME School in Borden to start the first Super Tech course, which didn’t actually have an end date when it started. It was during this course that the AT School moved back to the home of the Logistics, CFSAL. In June 2003, after finally graduating from the gruelling 14 month course, he was posted to WATC in Wainwright for his second posting to Alberta. It was during this posting when he hit the jackpot and was selected for the HB course in Florida from December 2006 to May 2007. Yes, that is when the Canadian dollar was worth more than the American one.
After his first tasking to the school as incremental staff from May to July 2009, Dave was posted back to BC but to the MARPAC FESO position in Esquimalt. This posting presented considerable opportunity to cross-train with the FAI section, which prepared him for deployment to Hawaii in April 2014 to reconstitute the ammo that was onboard HMCS PROTECTEUR after her fire at sea. It was during this deployment that Dave became the only AT to run a deammunitioning for PROTECTEUR from both an Explosives Safety and Navy perspective. During his posting to MARPAC, Dave also did two more stints at the school as incremental staff, prompting him to accept a posting to CFLTC in July 2014.
During his two year posting to the school, he was the course director for a QL5 and the chief instructor for an ATO course and a QL3. He was also tasked as the ETC Training WO plus Ammo Standards for a year. In July 2016, Dave was posted for his third (and final) time to Alberta, to 1 Svc Bn in Wainwright as the Pl WO for the ammo section. He deployed on OP UNIFIER Roto 3 to the Ukraine with the LDSH (RC) from March to September 2017 as both the J4 Ops NCO and the Task Force J4 Ammo. Finally, he assumed the duties of the Wainwright Sr AT in May 2018.
After 24 years and change in the CAF, Dave will be retiring on 22 October 2018 as he has accepted a position as a GT-2 at the Wainwright ammo compound. Along with his wife Laura
Lyn and their daughter Evelyn, they will also be expanding their farm North of Edgerton, AB. There will be a DWD at Buffalo Park Hall in Wainwright at 1100hrs on 19 October 2018. Enfin! Le temps est venu pour l’adjudant Dave Harden de prendre sa retraite des forces armées canadiennes.
Dave a joint les forces en tant qu’Ingénieur de Combat à Calgary le 17 Octobre 1994 et a immédiatement débuté le deuxième cours de recrue (anglais) donner à la BFC Saint-Jean, QC.
Après avoir gradué de son cours de recrue il fut muté à Chilliwack, CB où il compléta son NQ3 et fut muté par la suite au 1 CER. Après la fermeture de la BFC Chilliwack en 1996, Dave fut muté à Edmonton, sa première mutation en Alberta.
Lors de sa mutation à Edmonton, Dave fut déployé en Bosnie sur l’OP Palladium Roto 1, Juillet 1997 à Janvier 1998, avec LDSH(RC). Il fut aussi déployé au Manitoba pour combattre l’inondation du siècle durant l’entraînement pour cette mission. En août 1998 il fut déployé pour combattre les feux de forêt à Salmon Arm, CB et par la suite il compléta son NQ5 à l’école du Génie de Combat à Gagetown.
En Septembre 2000 il fut déployé pour la 2eme fois en Bosnie avec 3 VP pour la Roto 6. Durant ce déploiement il a enfin vue la lumière en demandant son transfert en tant que technicien de munition (ou il pourra toujours faire des explosions et ne plus construire de ponts).
En Avril 2002, il fut accepté dans le métier et fut muté à l’école GEM à Borden pour le premier ‘Super Tech’ course, dont il n’avait pas de date de fin quand le cours a commencer. D’ailleurs c’est durant son cours que l’école des Techniciens de Munitions a déménager à la maison mère de la Logistique, CFSAL. En Juin 2003, après la graduation d’un long et intensif cours de 14 mois, il fut muté à WATC à Wainwright, AB. Durant sa mutation il gagna le jackpot et fut sélectionner pour le cours HB en Floride de Décembre 2006 à May 2007, et oui c’est pendant ce temps que le dollar Canadien valait plus que le dollar Américain.
Après avoir complété une tache d’instructeur à l’école de Mai à Juillet 2009, Dave fut transféré en Colombie-Britannique en tant que MARPAC FESO à Esquimalt. Cette position présenta une excellente opportunité de s’entrainer avec la section FAI pour un déploiement à Hawaii en Avril 2014.
Dave est le seul technicien de munition à avoir dirigé un deammunitioning pour le HMCS Protecteur. Durant son temps à MARPAC il fut employé a deux reprises comme instructeur à l’école et muté par la suite à l’école en Juillet 2014.
Durant son temps à l’école, il fut directeur de cours pour un NQ5 et chef instructeur pour un cours d’ATO et NQ3. De plus il fut assigné pendant un an comme Adjudant responsable de l’entrainement et une autre année comme Adjudant des normes. En Juillet 2016, Dave fut muté une troisième et dernière fois en Alberta, comme Adjudant de peloton du 1 bataillon de service à Wainwright. Il fut déployé une dernière fois en Ukraine sur l’Opération UNIFIER Roto 3 avec LDSH(RC) de Mars à Septembre 2017 comme J4 OPS NCO et Task Force J4 Ammo. Pour conclure sa carrière il assume le rôle de Technicien de Munition Senior depuis Mai 2018.
Après plus de 24 années de service aux forces canadiennes, Dave prendra sa retraite le 22 Octobre 2018, car il accepté une position de GT-2 à la section de munition de Wainwright. Avec
sa conjointe Lauralyn et leur fille Evelyn ils veulent aussi agrandir leur ferme au nord de Edgerton, AB. Il y aura un dîner de départ avec dignité au Buffalo Park Hall (Grn Wainwright) à 1100hrs le 19 Octobre 2018.
