After 26 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces, WO Cowell will retire from here at 5 Canadian Division Support Base, Detachment Aldershot on the 23rd of August, 2018.
Originally from the Ottawa Valley, James enrolled on the 11th of August, 1977 with the Infantry. Signing on with the Royal Canadian Regiment, found himself in Cornwallis Nova Scotia being told that he was now part of the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry. Sadly this meant that he would be sent to the 3rd Battalion at CFB Esquimalt, Work Point Barracks. By 1979 he would be back in Ontario standing up 3 Commando of the Elite Canadian Airborne Regiment. In 1982 now a MCpl was back with the 3rd PPCLI. By 1984 he OT’d to Aerospace Defence. During this time now Cpl Cowell went back to school obtaining his High School Diploma in order to apply for a Commission that he was highly recommend to do. His grunt attitude did not fit in well with the Air Force, thus the plan was to become an Infantry Officer back in the army world. Unfortunately circumstances change and James was released or retired under 3B.
Mr. Cowell was a lifer and did not fit well in the civilian world, so he worked tiredly to be reinstated; in 2006 once again at 48 years of age Pte Cowell was attending Battle School in Meafort Ont, heading for Jump Company 3 RCR in Petawawa Ont. During this time Pte Cowell OT’d to Ammunition Technician. One year later and with the back pay he was given his Cpl rank and asked if he would go back to the Infantry of which he declined. For the next three years James was posted back and forth between the Ammo School and CFAD Angus. On January, 2011 he was off to CFB Edmonton for work-up training to deploy with the Closer Mission of Kandahar; In April of the same year he was reassigned to a new mission in Kabul where he would stay until March of 2012; finally returning home to Lady Nathalie.
In June 2013, now Sgt Cowell was posted to Camp Aldershot, known now as 5 CDSB Det Aldershot, where he has served as the Senor and only Ammunition Technician for the Det as well as providing his expertise to 14 Wing Greenwood.
James will continue to enjoy the beauty and wonder of the Annapolis Valley as he retires with his New Bride, Nathalie Renaud in their home in New Minas, NS.
Before his retirement Sgt Cowell will be promoted to WO Cowell; thus a Departure with Dignity was held for WO Cowell on Friday, 20 April, 2018, 14:00 hrs at the Borden Hall Combined Mess, 1400 Lanzy Rd. Aldershot NS.

En s’engageant avec le Royal Canadian Regiment, il s’est trouvé à Cornwallis, en Nouvelle-Écosse, à qui on avait dit qu’il faisait maintenant partie de l’infanterie légère du Princess Patricia (PPCLI). Malheureusement, cela signifiait qu’il serait envoyé au 3e Bataillon à la BFC Esquimalt, à la caserne Work Point. En 1979, il serait de retour en Ontario et ferait partie du 3e Commando du Régiment aéroporté canadien d’élite. En 1982, le Cplc était de retour avec le 3e PPCLI. En 1984, il a été affecté à la défense aérospatiale. Pendant ce temps, le Cpl Cowell est retourné à l’école pour obtenir son diplôme d’études secondaires afin de postuler à une commission qu’il était fortement recommandé de faire. Son attitude de grognement ne cadrait pas bien avec l’armée de l’air, le plan était donc de devenir officier d’infanterie dans le monde militaire. Malheureusement, les circonstances changent et James a été libéré ou il a pris sa retraite sous 3B.
Cowell était un condamné à perpétuité et ne correspondait pas bien au monde civil, alors il travaille avec fatigue pour être réintégré; En 2006, à 48 ans, le Sdt Cowell fréquentait à nouveau l’école de combat de Meafort, en Ontario, en direction de Jump Company 3 RCR, à Petawawa, en Ontario. Pendant ce temps, le soldat Cowell a été nommé technicien en munitions. Un an plus tard, avec son salaire rétroactif, il a reçu son grade de Cpl et a demandé s’il retournerait à l’infanterie dont il a refusé. Pendant les trois années qui ont suivi, James a été muté entre l’école de munition et CFAD Angus. En janvier 2011, il s’est rendu à la BFC Edmonton pour suivre une formation de préparation au déploiement avec la mission rapprochée de Kandahar. En avril de la même année, il a été réaffecté à une nouvelle mission à Kaboul où il restera jusqu’en mars 2012; de retour au foyer avec sa Lady Nathalie.
En juin 2013, le Sgt Cowell a été muté au camp Aldershot, maintenant connu sous le nom de 5 CDSD Det Aldershot, où il a occupé les fonctions de technicien en munitions pour le Dét.
James continuera de profiter de la beauté et des merveilles de la vallée de l’Annapolis alors qu’il prendra sa retraite avec sa nouvelle mariée, Nathalie Renaud, à New Minas, en Nouvelle-Écosse.
Avant sa retraite, le Sgt Cowell sera promu Adj Cowell; ainsi, un départ dans la dignité a eu lieu pour l’adjudant Cowell le vendredi 20 avril 2018, à 14 heures, au mess Borden Hall, au 1400, chemin Lanzy. Aldershot NS.
