MWO George Lake – Traffic Technician
MWO George Lake was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Robert Martin and Judith Anne Lake in 1965. He spent his first 21 years in the Dartmouth/ Halifax area until joining the Canadian Forces in 1986 as a Traffic Technician, following in the footsteps of his uncle, George McGinnis. After basic training, 6 months of French language training, pre QL3 and QL3 training he was posted to 1 Air Movements Unit, Edmonton, Alberta where he remained from March 1987 to Aug 1990.
After his tour with 1 AMU he was posted to CFB Suffield, A B. until Jan 1995. This was a need to fill a position, to an area unknown to then Pte Lake. Fortunately, this turned out to be an excellent posting for George and his young family as he was home for the majority of the time to help raise his children.
In April of 1994, Cpl Lake was asked if he would like to become a CC130 Hercules Loadmaster. At the time he was very excited and very nervous as it had been a while since he had been involved in any type of aircraft handling. After completing his screening and medical requirements for aircrew, he was course loaded on his CC130 course with a start date in Oct of 1994.
On 1 Dec 1994 during a BOXTOP in Thule, Greenland he was promoted to the rank of MCpl. It was during this time he completed his last supervised check ride at 426 Sqn and in Jan 1995 he was posted to 435 Sqn in Winnipeg.
Since his arrival in Winnipeg in 1995 George spent his 9 years at 435 Sqn ( with a brief interruption to go on tour during Op Appollo in 2003 ) , 3 ½ years at 1 Air Mov Sqn , then back to 43 5 Sqn as the Loadmaster Leader before finally transferring over to the reserve forces in Feb of 2013.
George and Carla have 5 daughters through a blended marriage; Samantha, Sabrina, Chloe, Lena and Jayne. Four still reside in Winnipeg and one in Newfoundland. There are also 2 grandchildren in Newfoundland, Lily and Zoey and one on the way.
It is now 2017, and it is time to throw in the towel. George and Carla will be retiring to Vancouver Island, Campbell River to their new home for the winters. Carla and George are very active and plan on enjoying what the area has to offer, Hiking, Kayaking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing and many other activities. Carla has also completed her Pila te’s instructor course and plans on working from home in Campbell River. George says he would like to get hired on as a deckhand to try the crab fishing season ( Deadliest Catch) and a season of Herring fishing. They will continue to spend spring/summer and fall at their cottage in North West Ontario on Royal Lake. They plan to stay connected with the wonderful friends they have in the Winnipeg area.

Après son cours de recru es , 6 mois d’entrainement en lang u e second e , et formation de base pour le métier , il fut muté au 1 er Escadron (Esc) des mouvements aériens , Edmo nton , Alberta où il est resté de mars 1987 à août 1990.
Après cette mutation il fut affecté à BFC Suffield, Alberta jusqu’en janvier 1995. Ceci était pour combler une position dans un endroit qui était inconnu du soldat Lake. Heureusement ce fut une trè s belle expérience pour George et sa jeune famille car il était à la maison la majorité du temps , ce qui lui a permis de voi r grandir s es enfants ainsi que de participe r plus activement à l eur développement .
En avril 1994 le Cpl Lake fut choisi pour devenir arrimeur pour le CC130 Herc u les. Cette opportunité le rendu à la fois ex c ité et très nerveux car il n’avait pas travaillé avec ce type d’aéronef depuis un bon bout de temps. Il rencontrât les exigences pour devenir personnel navigant et compléta av ec succès la formation d’arrimeur en oct obre 1994.
Le 1 er décembre 1994 lors de l’opération BOXTOP à Thule , Groenland , il fut promu au rang de Cplc. Lors de cette mutation il compléta son dernier vol sous supervision à l’ Esc 426 et en janv ier 1995 il fut muté à l’ Esc 435 à Winnipeg.
Depuis son arrivée à Winnipe g en 1995 , George a passé 9 ans à l’Esc 4 35 , avec un déploiement à Op Apollo en 2003 , et 3 ans et demie à l a 1 er Esc mouvements aériens , pour ensuit e retour ner à l’Esc 435 dans le poste de chef arr imeur . Il a transféré à la réserve en fév. 2013.
George et Carla on 5 filles de mariages combinés , Samantha, Sabrina, Chloe, Lena et Jayne. Quatre d’entre elles demeurent à Winnipeg , et une à Terre – Neuve . Ils ont aussi deux petits – enfants à Terre – Neuve , Lily et Zoey , et en auront un aut re dans un futur très rapproché .
C’est maintenant 2017 , et le temps de passe r à autre chose. George et Carla vont s’établ ir à Campbell River s ur l’ile de Vancouver , dans leur nouvelle maison où ils planifient passer les hi vers et profiter de l’endroit pour pratiquer des loisirs comme la randonnée , l e k ayak , la raquette, le ski de randonnée, la pê che et beaucoup d’autres activit és. Carla a également complété une formation d’instructeur de cours de Pilates et a pour projet de travailler de la maison. George , pour sa part, aimera it , durant la saison de pêche aux crab es , trouver un emploi à titre de m atelot de pond pour participer à « Deadl iest Catch » et la pêche aux harengs. Ils vont également continuer à passer leurs étés à leur chalet dans le nord – ouest de l’Ontario , à Royal Lake , et fréquenter leurs amies dans la région de Winnipeg.
