MGEN PAUL ORMSBY, RCAF
1. MGEN PAUL ORMSBY WILL BE RETIRING FROM THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES AFTER MORE THAN 35 YEARS OF SERVICE, EFFECTIVE 2 JULY 2019.
2. MGEN PAUL ORMSBY ENROLED AS AN OFFICER CADET IN THE REGULAR OFFICER TRAINING PROGRAM IN 1984, PART-WAY THROUGH HIS UNIVERSITY DEGREE WHEN THE MONEY FOR TUITION BECAME TIGHT AND HE SADLY HAD TO ACCEPTING THE FACT HE WOULD NEVER MAKE IT AS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN. HE GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO IN 1986 WITH A DEGREE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE THEN PROCEEDED TO WINNIPEG TO COMPLETE HIS AIR NAVIGATOR TRAINING, RECEIVING HIS WINGS IN OCTOBER 1987 AND A POSTING TO HIS FIRST OPERATIONAL TOUR AT 407 SQUADRON IN COMOX, FLYING THE CP140 AURORA.
3. SOME OF MGEN ORMSBY S FONDEST CAREER HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE HIS TIME AS OFFICER COMMANDING THE COMMAND IN MATERIEL GROUP, DEPUTY COMMANDER FOR THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES NORAD REGION, COMMANDER TASK FORCE NAPLES DURING OP UNIFIED PROTECTOR (2011), CO OF THE AEROSPACE ENGINEERING TEST ESTABLISHMENT (2009-2011), CO 407 MARITIME PATROL SQUADRON (2004-2006), AND CO MARITIME PROVING AND EVALUATION UNIT (2000-2002).
4. SOME OF HIS NOTABLE STAFF ASSIGNMENTS INCLUDED DIRECTOR GENERAL MARITIME HELICOPTER PROJECT, BRINGING THE CH148 CYCLONE INTO SERVICE TO REPLACE THE SEAKING (2012-2014), SERVING IN THE PENTAGON AS THE CDS LIASON OFFICER TO THE US CHAIRMAN OF THE JOINT CHIEF OF STAFF (2012- 2014), DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF US CENTRAL COMMAND S J5 COMBINED PLANNING GROUP (2007-2009), AND A3 MARITIME (AIR) READINESS, 1 CANADIAN AIR DIVISION HQ IN WINNIPEG (2002-2004).
5. HIS FIRST LOVE IS FLYING AND OVER THE COURSE OF HIS CAREER HE WAS FORTUNATE TO FLY OVER 2400 HOURS ON 11 DIFFERENT AIRCRAFT TYPES, ON THREE OPERATIONAL TOURS AND THREE FLIGHT TEST TOURS. HE ALSO ACHIEVED AN UNEXPECTED MILESTONE OF NEVER HAVING TWO JOBS BACK-TO- BACK IN THE SAME LOCATION, CAUSING HIM TO MOVE HIS FAMILY TO NEW CITIES A TOTAL OF 18 TIMES IN 35 YEARS (AND MUCH IS NOW OWED BY HIM TO HIS FAMILY FOR THIS).
6. MGEN ORMSBY S FUTURE PLANS INCLUDE SPENDING TIME TRAVELING AND BEING WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY, INCLUDING HIS WIFE JACQUIE AND SONS DAVID AND RYAN.
