MCPL DEREK FRASER, 00169, Ammo Tech
After 20 years of loyal service to the Canadian Armed Forces, MCpl Derek Fraser will retire on 3 October 2018.
Originally from Timmins, Ontario, Derek joined the Forces as an Artilleryman in September 1998. After completing basic training, he was posted to Shilo to undergo Battle School, where he began accumulating accolades as a member of the Top Detachment for his course. A posting to B Battery, 1st Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery followed, with whom he deployed to the Former Republic of Yugoslavia from September 2000 to March 2001, to the G8 Summit in Kananaskis in June 2001, to the McClure fires in August 2003, and on Task Force 1-08 in Afghanistan from February to September 2008. In between, he completed his Primary Leadership Qualification, served in a variety of functions within 1 RCHA, instructed on several courses, and was promoted to Master Bombardier. In 2009, Derek was posted to Gagetown to serve at the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery School, W Bty, where he was promoted to Sergeant and completed his DP3. He was then posted to 67 Bty as an Instructor in the DP1 cell and was awarded three Top Detachment awards during Arty DP1 courses. Sent back to W Bty as the Det Commander of Sr Gun 25A, he completed the Basic Recce and Basic Tech courses, for which he was awarded the Top Student award in 2011. The next step was to earn a commendation for his excellent work as a Section commander for the RCAS holding platoon.
Derek fired his last round with the Artillery in 2012, just before his Occupational Transfer to Ammunition Technician. Upon completion of his QL3 in Borden in November 2013, he was posted to 2 Service Battalion in Petawawa, where he has remained since. He completed his QL5 in February 2016 and deployed to Latvia as part of Rotation 9 Op REASSURANCE from January to July 2018, during which time he was promoted to MCpl. In Latvia, Derek was awarded the title of the Battle Group “Defender of the Week” for the Canadian Contingent during a High Readiness Exercise, adding to his cumulative honors.
After retirement, Derek hopes to obtain a GT-02 Civilian Ammo Tech position in Petawawa. His wife, Jennifer, and their son are looking forward to spending more time with him. A Depart with Dignity function will be held at the Nelson Street Pub, 207 Nelson St, Pembroke, ON, at noon on 19 October 2018. Après avoir complété son cours de recrues, il fut muté à Shilo pour entreprendre l’école de combat, où il commença à accumuler les accolades en tant que membre du Meilleur Détachement de son cours. Ceci fut suivi par une mutation à la Batterie B, 1er Régiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, avec qui il déploya à l’Ex-République de Yougoslavie de septembre 2000 à mars 2001, au sommet du G8 à Kananaskis en juin 2001, aux feux de McClure en août 2003 et sur la Force Opérationnelle 1-08 en Afghanistan de février à septembre 2008. Entretemps, il compléta sa Qualification élémentaire en leadership, servit des fonctions variées au sein du 1 RCHA, enseigna sur plusieurs cours et fut promu à Bombardier-chef. En 2009, Derek fut muté à Gagetown à W Bie, École du Régiment royal de l’Artillerie canadienne où il compléta son cours DP3 et fut promu au rang de sergent. Ensuite, il fut muté à 67 Bie en tant qu’instructeur dans la cellule DP1 et fut octroyé trois prix de Meilleur Détachement pendant les cours de DP1 artillerie. Lors de son retour à W Bie en tant que commandant de détachement du Sr Gun 25A, il compléta les cours de Reconnaissance de base et Basic Tech, pour lequel il reçut la mention de Meilleur Candidat en 2011. La prochaine étape fut de mériter une mention élogieuse pour son excellent travail en tant que commandant de section pour le peloton d’attente de l’ERRAC.
Derek tira sa dernière ronde avec l’artillerie en 2012, juste avant son reclassement en tant que Technicien en munitions. À la fin de son NQ3 à Borden en novembre 2013, il fut muté au 2ème Bataillon des Services à Petawawa, où il demeure depuis. Il compléta son NQ5 en févier 2016 et déploya en Lettonie avec la rotation 9 d’Op REASSURANCE de janvier à juillet 2018, pendant laquelle il a été promu Caporal-chef. En Lettonie, Derek mérita le titre du « Défendeur de la semaine » du groupe de bataille pour le contingent canadien pendant un exercice de niveau de préparation élevée, ajoutant à ses honneurs cumulatifs.
Après sa retraite, Derek espère travailler en tant que Technicien de munitions civil GT-02 à Petawawa. Sa femme, Jennifer, et leur fils ont hâte de passer plus de temps avec lui. Un dîner de Départ avec dignité aura lieu à midi le 19 octobre au Nelson Street Pub, 207 rue Nelson, Pembroke, ON.
