MAJ VAN DER KAMP, 00328, LOG OFFICER
Maj Lorraine van der Kamp is retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces on the 17th of September 2018 after an exciting career which spanned over 34 years.
Born in Montreal, Quebec, Lorraine joined the forces on 26 August, 1984 as a Supply Technician under the Youth Training and Employment Program (YTEP). In April 1985, she renewed her contract as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator (MSE OP) and fully enjoyed this trade for over 20 years. Her first posting was in North Bay, Ontario where she had the opportunity to refuel good old “T Birds”, brand new CF 18s, drove the bus in the “hole” and deployed to Namibia, Africa (UNTAG1989). In 1990, she was posted to 4 Service Battalion “B” Platoon (4 Svc Bn) Lahr, Germany where she participated in several annual NATO exercises and enjoyed driving the famous MAN truck (life was far simpler during the Cold War). In 1993, she was transferred to Ramstein, Germany and worked as a VIP driver at International Motorpool for AIRCENT, with NATO Head Quarters. She returned to Canada in 1995 and went to Kingston Ontario where she would stay until 2004. During that time, she worked at Base Transport (ILS), 79 Communication Regiment, and upon her promotion to the rank of MCpl in 2000 was posted to CF Joint Signal Regiment (CFJSR). In 2003, she was part of Ex MERCURY TREK, the epic journey in cycling across Canada. In 2004, she moved to Cold Lake where she worked as vehicle Safety Supervisor, Log Support Assistant for Ex Maple Flag and finally as the Wing vehicle Fleet Manager. Shortly after being promoted to the rank of Sgt in 2005, she accepted the offer to take her commission under the Commissioning from the Ranks (CFR) program. In 2007 she was posted to Trenton as a Lt where she held the Mobile Support Equipment Officer (MSEO) position in 8 Wing Tn/EME Flt for one year. In 2008, Lorraine was posted to 2 Air Movement Squadron as a Mobile Air Movements Officer (MAMSO). During this posting, she went on several taskings and deployments including a 6 month tour to SWA in support of OP ATHENA. In 2010 she was deployed on OP HESTIA to support the humanitarian relief efforts responding to the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti. In 2011, she was posted to 437 Squadron and began an outstanding 4 years as the Cabin Crew Leader and Loadmaster on the A-310 Polaris, Airbus. During her time there, she truly enjoyed flying with troops, veterans, and VVIP’s such as the Prime Minister, Governor General and members of the Royal family. Her last posting would be in Ottawa, Ontario with Strategic Joint Staff (SJS), J4 Transportation 3 where she gained a profound appreciation of the complexity of the movement’s world while experiencing the interesting challenges associated with Materiel Traffic Policy & Systems and staffing.
Lorraine leaves with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to learn, to work hard, to travel and to gain the experiences she has. She is grateful for having had the chance to work with so many truly great people who supported her in her career.
Upon retirement, Lorraine will continue exploring the outdoors, travelling and spending time with family and friends. She also intends on enjoying life as a military spouse….who knew?
Finally, Lorraine would like to offer her sincere gratitude to her husband, Gabe and her son Francis for the love and support they provided throughout her career.
Although no DWD ceremony will be taking place, Lorraine would like to welcome everyone who wishes to imbibe in a social beverage with her on 7 September between 14:00 – 17:00 at Darcy McGee’s, 44 Sparks Street, Ottawa.

Le Maj Lorraine van der Kamp prendra sa retraite des Forces armées canadiennes le 17 septembre 2018 après une carrière intéressante qui a duré plus de 34 années.
Née à Montréal, au Québec, Lorraine s’est enrôlée dans les Forces le 26 août 1984 en tant que technicienne en approvisionnement dans le cadre du Programme d’instruction et d’emploi pour les jeunes (PIEJ). En avril 1985, elle a renouvelé son contrat en tant que chauffeur de matériel roulant (Chauf MR) et a énormément apprécié ce métier pendant plus de 20 ans. Sa première affectation a été à North Bay, en Ontario, où elle a eu l’occasion de ravitailler en carburant de bons vieux « T Birds » et de nouveaux CF 18, de conduire l’autobus dans le tunnel et de participer à un déploiement en Namibie, en Afrique (UNTAG1989). En 1990, elle a été affectée au peloton B du 4e Bataillon des services (4 bon svc) à Lahr, en Allemagne, où elle a participé à plusieurs exercices annuels de l’OTAN et a apprécié conduire les célèbres MAN truck (la vie était beaucoup plus simple pendant la guerre froide). En 1993, elle a été transférée à Ramstein, en Allemagne, et a travaillé en tant que conductrice de personnalités de marque au parc de véhicules international pour AIRCENT, au quartier général de l’OTAN. Elle est revenue au Canada en 1995 et est allée à Kingston, en Ontario, où elle est demeurée jusqu’en 2004. Pendant cette période, elle a travaillé au Transport de la base (SLI), 79e Régiment de communication, et lors de sa promotion au grade de cplc en 2000, elle a été affectée au Régiment des transmissions interarmées des Forces canadiennes (RTIFC). En 2003, elle a participé à l’Ex MERCURY TREK, le parcours épique en cyclisme qui traverse le Canada. En 2004, elle est déménagée à Cold Lake où elle a travaillé en tant que superviseure de la sécurité des véhicules, adjointe du soutien logistique pour l’Ex Maple Flag et enfin gestionnaire du parc de véhicules de l’escadre. Peu après sa promotion au grade de sgt en 2005, elle a accepté l’offre de participer au programme d’intégration au rang d’officier. En 2007, elle a été affectée à Trenton en tant que lt où elle a occupé le poste d’officier du matériel roulant (OMR) à la 8e Escadre Tn/Ele GEM pendant un an. En 2008, elle a été affectée au 2e Escadron des mouvements aériens en tant qu’officier de section mobile des mouvements aériens. Pendant cette affectation, elle a participé à plusieurs missions et déploiements, dont une période de 6 mois en ASO à l’appui de l’OP ATHENA. En 2010, elle a été affectée à l’OP HESTIA pour soutenir les efforts d’aide humanitaire à la suite du tremblement de terre catastrophique en Haïti. En 2011, elle a été affectée au 437e Escadron et a entamé une période exceptionnelle de 4 ans en tant que cheffe du personnel de cabine et arrimeur à bord du A-310 Polaris d’Airbus. Pendant cette période, elle a beaucoup aimé voler avec les troupes, les anciens combattants et les très hautes personnalités telles que le premier ministre, le gouverneur général et les membres de la famille royale. Sa dernière affectation a été à Ottawa, en Ontario, au sein de l’État-major interarmées stratégique (EMIS), en tant que J4 Transports 3, où elle a acquis une profonde appréciation pour la complexité du monde des mouvements tout en faisant l’expérience des défis intéressants liés à la politique et au système sur la circulation du matériel et à la dotation.
Lorraine quitte avec un sentiment de gratitude pour avoir eu l’occasion d’apprendre, de travailler fort, de voyager et d’acquérir de l’expérience. Elle est reconnaissante d’avoir pu travailler avec de nombreuses personnes extraordinaires qui l’ont appuyé pendant sa carrière.
Lors de sa retraite, Lorraine continuera de faire du tourisme de plein air, de voyager et de passer du temps avec la famille et les amis. Elle a également l’intention de profiter de la vie en tant que conjointe militaire… qui le savait?
Enfin, Lorraine aimerait remercier sincèrement son mari, Gabe, et son fils Francis, pour l’amour et le soutien qu’ils lui ont donné tout au long de sa carrière.
Même s’il n’y aura aucune cérémonie de départ dans la dignité, Lorraine invite les gens à venir prendre un verre avec elle le 7 septembre, de 14 h à 17 h, au Darcy McGee’s, au 44, rue Sparks, à Ottawa.
