1. AFTER MORE THAN 37 YEARS OF LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY AND THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, CWO SHERM NEIL WILL RETIRE ON 20 NOVEMBER 2017
2. CWO NEIL JOINED THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES ON 18 APRIL 1980 AT CFRC LONDON. AFTER COMPLETION OF BASIC TRAINING AT THE CF RECRUIT SCHOOL IN CORNWALLIS AND TRADES TRAINING AT CFSAL BORDEN HE WAS POSTED TO CFB BORDEN WHERE HE SERVED IN THE ORDERLY ROOM AND AT THE BASE HEADQUARTERS. IN 1985 HE WAS POSTED TO THE CF – 18 WEAPONS SYSTEM SUPPORT UNIT IN COLD LAKE WHERE HE RECEIVED HIS INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SYSTEMS. JUNE OF 1988 HE WAS POSTED TO THE 8TH CANADIAN HUSSARS IN LAHR, GERMANY WHERE HE WAS EMPLOYED AS T HE B SQUADRON CLERK AND WHEN PROMOTED TO MCPL HE ASSUMED THE ROLE OF IC OF THE ROR. IN 2000 HE WAS SELECTED TO FILL THE CHIEF CLERK S POSITION WITH 1 CANADIAN DIVISION (FORWARD) IN LAHR AND WORKED IN THE WAR ROOM DURING THE FIRST GULF WAR. IN APRIL OF 19 92 CWO NEIL VOLUNTEERED TO DEPLOY WITH THE R22ER BATTLE GROUP TO VIKOVAR, CROATIA AS PART OF ROTO 0 OF OPERATION HARMONY. UPON COMPLETION OF HIS TOUR HE WAS POSTED BACK TO CANADA WHERE HE SPENT A SHORT YEAR WITH 707 COMMUNICATION SQUARDRON IN NORTH BAY, O NTARIO. PROMOTED TO SGT IN 1993 HE WAS SELECTED TO SUPPORT RESERVE ACTIVITIES AT THE NB AND PEI DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS IN MONCTON, NB. JULY OF 1995 SAW HIS RETURN TO THE 8TH CANADIAN HUSSARS TO THEIR HOME STATION IN MONCTON AND HE WAS POSTED BACK TO THE R EGIMENT AS THE CHIEF CLERK. CWO NEIL WORKED WITH THE 8CH FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS IN MONCTON AS THE REGIMENT EVOLVED INTO A TOTAL FORCE UNIT AND THEN REVERTED BACK TO RESERVE STATUS. IN 1999 HE WAS PROMOTED TO WO AND POSTED TO CFSU (OTTAWA). THIS POSTING WAS TO BE A STEPPING STONE BACK TO THE ARMY HOWEVER IT TURNED INTO HIS MOST LUCRATIVE AND LAST GEOGRAPHICAL MOVE. AS A WO HE ROTATED THROUGH THE SECTIONS AT CFSU(O) AND WAS HAND PICKED TO WORK WITH THE NDHQ CWO FOR CEREMONIAL EVENTS IN THE NCR. SOME OF HIS MOST MEMORABLE TASKS INCLUDED THE LAYING IN STATE OF FORMER PRIME MINISTER, THE RIGHT HONOURABLE PIERRE ELLIOT TRUDEAU AND FORMER GOVERNER GENERAL, THE RIGHT HONOURABLE RAY HNATYSHYN. IN 2002 HE WAS SELECTED TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO THE TARNAK FARM (FRIENDLY FIRE) BOARD OF INQUIRY WHERE HE DEPLOYED WITH THE TEAM DURING THE COURSE OF THE INVESTIGATION. FOLLOWING THAT DEPLOYMENT HE WAS POSTED TO THE LANGUAGE SCHOOL FOR A YEAR AND THEN SPENT 2003 AT CFS LEITRIM AS THE STATION ADJUTANT. IT WAS DURING THIS POSTI NG THAT HIS SKILLS WERE CALLED UPON AGAIN TO RETURN TO AFGANISTAN TO SUPPORT THE JOWZ VALLEY BOARD OF INQUIRY. IN 2004 HE WAS SELECTED TO BECOME A CAREER MANAGER AND SPENT 4 YEARS IN THIS ROLE. UPON PROMOTION TO CWO IN 2008 HE WAS POSTED TO THE ARMY HEAD QUARTERS AS THE ARMY SUPERINTENDENT CLERK AND ARMY LOGISTICS CWO. IN 2010 HE WAS APPOINTED THE LOGISTICS BRANCH CWO AND IN 2011 HE WAS APPOINTED DIVISIONAL CWO FOR THE DIRECTOR GENERAL COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS. HE WAS ABOUT TO RETIRE IN 2014 WHEN THE CF CWO HANDPICKED HIM TO ASSUME THE ROLE OF PROJECT MANAGER FOR THE CPO1 AND CWO STRATEGIC EMPLOYMENT PROJECT. UNDER CWO NEILS LEADERSHIP THE PROJECT WAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED IN 2017 LEAVING A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF NCMS
3. CWO NEIL AND HIS WIF E, PAMELA, WILL REMAIN IN THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION FOR A FEW MORE YEARS WHERE HE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE THE CAF BY PLAYING AN ACTIVE PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW STRATEGIC INITIATIVE TO DEVELOP THE FIRST PRINCIPLES FOR TOTAL MILITARY COMPENSATION
