CWO Marquis
After 27 years of loyal and dedicated service to Canada and its people, CWO Erwan Marquis will release from the CAF on 14 August 2018.
Erwan Marquis was born in Ottawa in 1970, but was raised on the proper side of the Ottawa River (Gatineau). In 1990, while studying fulltime at the CEGEP de Hull and part-time at Ottawa U, avidly followed the news as the Oka Crisis was unfolding, decided he wanted adventure and presented himself the recruiting centre in Hull. Having been offered Artillery Officer by the recruiting Sgt, he displayed the full depth of his knowledge of all things military and declared that “a real soldier either rolls in the mud or drives a tank”…and was subsequently recruited in the infantry…
On November 12th 1990, Pte Marquis arrived at ERFC – Saint-Jean Québec, where he underwent reprogramming during Basic Training, and graduated on 31 January 1991. He was then transferred to the Combat School in Valcartier where he was informed by his instructors that kindergarten was over, that the real training was about to start, and it did. Pte Marquis graduated in May, and was posted to 3R22R on the same base. During his time in the Battalion, he deployed to Cyprus in 1992, Bosnia- Herzegovina in 1993 and 1996, as well as being part of the relief effort during the Ice Storm in 1998.
It is in the Vandoos, during his Assault Pioneer course and subsequent employment, that he discovered his love for the rapid sublimation of high energy molecules and the items to which they are attached (blowing stuff up). This lead to changing career paths, and embarking in a new adventure, becoming an Ammunition Technician. Training started in Borden Ontario January 1999, for a 20 month program which included an all-expenses paid yearlong stay in CFAD Dundurn Saskatchewan, of which he graduated in September 2000. Posted back to Valcartier at the Ammo platoon in 5 Bon SG, he was then deployed again to Bosnia in 2001. In 2005, now MCpl Marquis was posted to CFAD Angus (then CFAD Dundurn Det Angus) in Borden as the Second Line R&I 2IC and Shipper. 2006 was a pivotal year where he was trained as an IEDD Operator, promoted and posted to CFLTC (then CFSAL) as an IEDD Instructor, which became a passion that would define the rest of his career. Sgt Marquis remained an instructor at CFSAL till his promotion to WO in 2010 and subsequent posting back to CFAD Angus to take on the various WO positions. From CFAD, he was deployed on a short stint to Kandahar Air Field in 2011, as the team leader for the HPLC phase 3 TAV. The CAF saw fit to promote him again (this can definitely be blamed on his boss at the time Maj Gerry Doyle), to be posted back to CFLTC as the X-Div (then Explosive Training Cadre) CSM, a position that was both very demanding, and extremely rewarding. In 2016, 10 years after his arrival to Borden and having filled almost every position an Ammo Tech can on that base, he was moved back home to the NCR. Posted in as the token Ammo Tech at JCET TF (formerly CF EOD), he embarked on one of his grandest adventures, being tasked as the Canadian SME on a team writing doctrine for the United Nations regarding IEDD Treat Mitigation, travelling to Pakistan, Ireland, Australia, China, Belgium, and finally the UN Headquarters in New York. During his time as JCET TF, he was also entrusted to be the RSM for the international EOD exercise Ardent Defender, which employed 275 participants from 17 countries and the UN. But, all good things must come to an end, and so he was promoted for a final time. With the promotion came a cubicle with a view at J4 Ammo, as the Ammo Tech Trade Advisor, a position that Pte Marquis would have never dreamed to achieve. Highlights in his career include EOD calls into a survivalist bunker and at Pearson Int Airport, everything to do with IEDD, sailing on the HMCS Oriole, all that crazy travelling around the world, but mostly the friends for life he has made and the incredible people he has had the honour to serve with.
Behold! A new adventure awaits! He has recently been offered a position within the Public Service, as the Demilitarisation LCMM at DAEME, looking forward to this new challenge. His spouse Isabelle Larose, daughters Gabrielle and Geneviève, and step-sons Gabriel and Jonathan are looking forward to spending lots of time with him in the pool at their new house.

Après 27 ans de bons et loyaux services rendus au Canada et ses citoyens, Adjuc Erwan Marquis prendra sa retraite des FAC le 14 août 2018.
Erwan Marquis est né à Ottawa en 1970, mais a grandi du bon côté de la Rivière de Outaouais (Gatineau). En 1990, pendant qu’il étudiait au CÉGEP de Hull à temps plein et l’Université d’Ottawa à temps partiel, suivait avidement la Crise d’Oka aux nouvelles, décida qu’il voulait vivre l’aventure et se présenta au centre de recrutement de Hull. S’ayant fait offrir un poste d’Officier d’Artillerie, il démontra la profondeur de ses connaissances en ce qui a trait à toutes choses militaires et déclara que “un vrai soldat se roule dans la bouette ou chauffe un tank”…et fut recruté en tant que fantassin…
Le 12 novembre 1990, Sdt Marquis arriva à l’ERFC – Saint-Jean Québec, ou il se fit reprogrammer pendant son entraînement aux recrues, et graduat le 31 janvier 1991. Il fut ensuite transféré à l’École de Combat à Valcartier où il fut informé par ses instructeurs que la maternelle était finie, que le vrai entraînement allait commencer, et c’est ce qui arriva. Sdt Marquis gradua en mai, et fut muté au 3R22R. Pendant son temps au bataillon, il fut déployé à Chypres en 1992, en Bosnie-Herzégovine en 1993 et 1996, et participa aux efforts en support de la Crise du Verglas en 1998.
C’est en tant que Vingt-Deux, suite à son entraînement et emploi comme Pionnier d’Assaut qu’il découvrit son amour pour la sublimation rapide des molécules à haute teneur d’énergie ainsi que des items qui y étaient attachés (faire exploser plein de choses). Ceci mena à un changement de carrière, et d’embarquer dans une nouvelle aventure, devenir un Technicien de Munitions. L’entraînement débuta à Borden en janvier 1999, pour un programme de 20 mois, qui a inclus une année à CFAD Dundurn Saskatchewan toutes dépenses payées, du quel il gradua en septembre 2000. Ensuite muté de retour à Valcartier au peloton de munitions du 5 Bon SG, il fut de nouveau déployé en Bosnie-Herzégovine en 2001. Vint 2005, ou Cplc Marquis fut muté à CFAD Angus à Borden en tant qu’adjoint de la section des émissions/réceptions de deuxième ligne et expéditeur. 2006 fut une année charnière ou il fut entraîné en tant qu’opérateur en Neutralisation d’engins explosifs improvisés (NEEI), promu et muté à CILFC en tant qu’instructeur NEEI, ce qui devint une passion qui définira sa carrière. Sgt Marquis resta instructeur jusqu’à sa promotion à Adj en 2010, et mutation subséquente qui le retourna à CFAD Angus afin de remplir les divers postes d’Adj. À partir de CFAD, il fut déployé pour une période courte à la Base de Kandahar, en tant que chef d’équipe pour la tâche en phase 3 de l’étude par chromatographie liquide. Les FAC ont vu bien décidant de promettre encore (Maj Gerry Doyle porte le blâme pour cela), et de le retourner à CILFC au cadre d’instruction en explosifs en tant que SMC, une position à la foi très exigeante et extrêmement valorisante. En 2016, dix ans après son arrivé à Borden et ayant comblé presque tous les postes qu’un Tech Mun peux à cette base, il fut retourné dans sa région natale. Muté en tant que seul Tech Mun à FOI-CME, il embarqua sur sa plus grande aventure à date, étant nommé l’expert en matière Canadien dans une équipe rédigeant de la doctrine pour les Nations Unies qui avait pour but des réduire les risques présentés par les engins explosifs improvisés, voyageant au Pakistan, en Irlande, en Australie, en Chine, en Belgique et finalement au QG des Nations Unies à New York. Pendant son temps à FOI-CME, il fut aussi désigné SMR de l’exercice international en neutralisation des explosifs et munitions (NEM) Ardent Defender, qui se vit employer 275 participants de 17 pays ainsi que les Nations Unies. Mais toute bonne chose tire à sa fin, et il fut promu une dernière foi. La promotion venait un espace de travail avec une vue au J4 Munitions, en tant qu’Adjuc de Métier pour les Techniciens de Munitions, une position à laquelle le Sdt Marquis n’aurait jamais aspiré. Hauts points de sa carrière incluent des tâches NEM dans un bunker et à l’aéroport Int Pearson, tout ce qui a rapport au NEEI, avoir
vogué sur le NCSM Oriole, tous les voyages incroyables autour du globe, mais surtout les amis à vie qu’il s’est fait et les gens incroyables avec qui il a eu l’honneur servir.
Mais que vois-je? Une nouvelle aventure à l’horizon! S’étant récemment fait offrir une position avec le Service Publique, en tant que gestionnaire des munitions à démilitariser à D Gest TME. Sa conjointe Isabelle Larose, ses filles Gabrielle et Geneviève, et beaux-fils Gabriel et Jonathan ont bien hâte de passer beaucoup de temps dans la piscine à leur nouvelle maison.
Adjuc Erwan Marquis prendra sa retraite des FAC le 14 août 2018, et une célébration de Départ avec Dignité se déroulera au pub Fox and Feather à Ottawa le 10 août à midi.
