CAPT JOHN MACDONALD
John McDonald was employed by the City of Flin Flon when he joined the Primary Reserves on 8 February, 1994, as a Logistics Officer with 21 Field Engineer Squadron in Flin Flon, Manitoba. When the Squadron was designated non-effective strength, John relocated to Regina and joined 16 Service Battalion before ending up at 16 Medical Company. During this time, John completed Basic Training, Supply Officer Specialty Course and the Militia Officer Staff Course. He enjoyed training so much so that given the opportunity to teach John took a five month tasking as the Training Officer for Reserve Officer Phase 2 and the Land Field Force Logistics course. He was employed in his first Class B position in Regina as a public affairs officer during the transition from Saskatchewan Militia District Headquarters to 38 Canadian Brigade Group. He deployed to the Manitoba Floods in 1997 working with 1 Canadian Mechanised Brigade Group Public Affairs cell during the Domestic Operation. Lt John MacDonald then went on a tasking to the Land Force Western Area Training Centre (LFWATC) in June 1997, as a course officer for a Primary Reserve Qualification Level 3 Resource Management Support course. Upon completion of the tasking, he was invited to stay at LFWATC on Class B as the Combat Service Support (CSS) Team Leader with the Militia Training Support Centre. On 5 September 1997 that he was promoted to Acting Capt. For the next two years, John assisted every LFWATC Primary Reserve Service Battalion and Medical Company with their mandated Collective Training exercise as the Combat Service Support Team Leader with the Militia Training Support Centre (MTSC). Over this period, he participated in 50+ exercises assisting the Primary Reserve units in achieving their assigned Battle Task Standards. He was promoted substantively to Captain on 1 July 1999. In 2000 he completed Primary Reserve Advanced Classification Training and in 2001 completed the Militia Command and Staff Course in Kingston. After two years with MilitiaTraining Support Centre (MTSC), he accepted another Class B position at LFWATC as the Reserve Professional Development Coordinator until 2001 and then as the Individual Training Officer until his promotion to Major in October 2004. At that time, he transferred to Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre (CMTC) as the Class B Reserve Plans Team Leader where he was responsible for the planning and execution of EX MAPLE DEFENDER. After six years of Class B with CMTC, John transferred to Regular Force as a Captain in July 2010. His first regular Officer posting was Adjutant for 41 Service Battalion where he stayed for three years before being posted to G4 Operations Base Suffield. In 2016, John was posted back to Wainwright returning to CMTC, however, his family enjoyed Medicine Hat so much that they remained there. At CMTC John was employed in the G5 cell as the Combat Service Support planner between 2016 and 2018 before moving over to 3 Canadian Division Support Base (CDSB) Detachment Wainwright as a temporary fill for their vacant Operations Officer position where he dealt with three major wildfires. John was recalled back to CMTC in the fall of 2018 where he stayed until retirement. John MacDonald has accepted a position with the Government of Saskatchewan as the Manager of Logistics and Technical Services in the Wildfire Branch of the Ministry of Environment located in Prince Albert Saskatchewan. He will enjoy coming home to his wife Lillian and two daughters, Sophie and Avery, after three years of commuting to Medicine Hat on Imposed Restrictions.

Le Capt John MacDonald a joint la réserve le 8 février 1994 en tant qu’officier logistique au sein du 21e Escadron des Ingénieurs à Flin Flon Manitoba alors qu’il travaillait pour la municipalité de Flin Flon. Lorsque l’unité a fermé ses portes, il est déménagé à Regina et a rejoint le 16e bataillon de services et éventuellement, la 16e compagnie médicale. Au cours de ses premières années de services, il a complété sa formation de base à Meaford, le cours d’officier en approvisionnement au centre d’instruction de logistique des Forces canadiennes (CILFC) et le cours d’état-major des officiers de milice à Edmonton. Il a également complété une tâche de cinq mois en tant que Officier d’Entrainement au CILFC pour les cours de logistique de l’armée. Il a débuté son premier poste en classe B à titre d’officier de Logistique et a aussi reçu l’entrainement d’officier d’Affaires Publiques durant la transition du Quartier Général du district de la milice de la 38ieme brigade en Saskatchewan. En 1997, il fut déployé sur une opération domestique en collaboration avec les affaires publiques du 1er groupe-brigade mécanisé du Canada (GBMC) en raison des inondations au Manitoba. Le Capt Macdonald a ensuite fait une tâche au Secteur de l’Ouest de la Force terrestre (SOFT) en juin 1997, en tant qu’officier de cours pour un cours de réserve de niveau de qualification 3 de soutien à la gestion des ressources. À la fin de la tâche, il est demeuré dans le SOFT en classe B comme chef d’équipe de Service de Soutien au Combat (SSC) avec le centre de soutien de l’entrainement de la milice (CSEM). Le 5 septembre 1997, il a été promu au grade de Capt intérimaire. Au cours des deux années suivantes, il a aidé les bataillons de services et la compagnie médicale du SOFT à compléter leur entrainement collectif mandaté en tant que chef d’équipe de SSC. Au cours de cette période, il a participé à plus de 50 exercices afin de permettre aux unités de réserve d’atteindre leurs normes d’aptitudes au combat. Il a été promu au grade de Capt le 1er juillet 1999. En 2000, il a complété la formation de classification avancée et, en 2001, il a complété le cours de commandement et d’état-major de la milice à Kingston. Après deux ans avec le CSEM, il a accepté un autre contrat en classe B au SOFT en tant que coordonnateur du perfectionnement professionnel de la réserve jusqu’à 2001, puis comme officier d’entrainement individuel jusqu’à sa promotion au grade de major en octobre 2004. À ce moment-là, il a été transféré au Centre Canadien d’Entrainement aux Manœuvres (CCEM) où il était responsable de la planification et de l’exécution de l’exercice MAPLE DEFENDER. Après six ans passés au CCEM, il a transféré dans la force régulière au grade de Capt en juillet 2010. Il a ensuite été affecté au 41e bataillon de services à Calgary en tant qu’Adjudant. Trois ans plus tard en 2013, il a été affecté à Suffield comme le G4 opérations. En 2016, il a été réaffecté au CCEM. Comme Medicine Hat est un endroit idéal pour sa famille, il est retourné à Wainwright en restriction imposée. Lors de sa deuxième affectation au CCEM, il fut employé dans la cellule G5 comme G5 plans SSC, puis à la cellule G4 en tant qu’officier de mouvement. Entre ces deux postes, il a été «prêté» à la base de Wainwright pour remplir position d’officier des opérations pendant six mois. Pendant cette période, il a géré trois incendies de forêt majeurs et deux défaillances majeures de l’infrastructure. Le Capt Macdonald a accepté un poste au sein du gouvernement de la Saskatchewan en tant que gestionnaire de la logistique et des services techniques dans la branche des incendies de forêt du ministère de l’environnement situé à Prince Albert. Il appréciera le temps à la maison avec sa femme Lillian et ses deux filles, Sophie et Avery, après trois ans loin du foyer.
