MWO HICKEYÂ??S FIRST POSTING AS AN OPERATOR WAS AT CFB GAGETOWN. HIS TIME SPENT AT GAGETOWN SET THE STAGE FOR HIS LONG CAREER. AFTER 6 YEARS IN NEW BRUNSWICK, IT WAS TIME FOR MWO HICKEY TO MOVE FROM A STATIC BASE TO A FIELD UNIT, AND
HE WAS POSTED TO FORWARD MOBILE SUPPORT UNIT (FMSU) IN LAHR, GERMANY IN JUNE 1987. AFTER 4 Â1⁄2 YEARS IN GERMANY AND A PROMOTION TO MCPL IN 1991, HE WAS AGAIN ON THE MOVE TO AN AIR BASE AT 4 WING COLD LAKE.
THIS ALBERTA POSTING POSITIONED HIM TO ENHANCE HIS SUPERVISORY SKILLS, AND HE WAS ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE HIS VERSATILITY IN A LARGE SPECTRUM OF ROLES RANGING FROM SECTION IC, TRG NCO FOR THE 935-05 PROGRAM, HEAVY EQUIPMENT SUPERVISOR, NCO IC BUDGET AND SAFETY SUPERVISOR. IN 1997, MWO HICKEY WAS POSTED TO SUPREME HEADQUARTERS ALLIED POWERS EUROPE (SHAPE) IN BELGIUM. WHILE THERE HE WAS PROMOTED TO WO IN 2005, AND ALSO DECIDED TO CHANGE UNIFORMS FROM ARMY TO AIR. HE SPENT A FAIR AMOUNT OF TIME AWAY FROM COMOX – 6 MONTHS IN CFS ALERT, NUNAVUT, 6 MONTHS AT GARRISON ST.
JEAN, QUEBEC INSTRUCTING RECRUITS, AND 6 MONTHS AT THE MULTINATIONAL
FORCE AND OBSERVERS (MFO) IN THE SINAI, EGYPT – PLUS SEVERAL OTHER COURSES AND TASKINGS OF SHORTER DURATIONS. IN 2008 IT WAS TIME TO
ONCE AGAIN MOVE ACROSS THE COUNTRY – THIS TIME BACK TO WHERE HIS CAREER BEGAN AT CFB GAGETOWN AS THE SPVO AT 3ASG TN COMPANY. AFTER BEING THERE ONLY 5 MONTHS, THE CM NOTIFIED TO HIM THAT HE WOULD BE PROMOTED TO MWO AND POSTED. AFTER FURTHER CONSIDERATION, THE POSTING ENDED UP BEING TO THE LANGUAGE SCHOOL FOR A YEAR-LONG (SEEMED LIKE 3 YEARS) FRENCH COURSE. AFTER COMPLETING THIS LANGUAGE TRAINING IN
2010, HE WAS POSTED BACK TO 3 ASG TN COY AS THE ONLY AIR FORCE CSM ON THE BASE. MWO HICKEY SPENT THREE YEARS AS THE CSM BEFORE ONCE AGAIN BEING POSTED IN 2013, THIS TIME TO ASU NORTH IN YELLOWKNIFE, NORTH
WEST TERRITORIES. WHILE AT ASU NORTH, HE ASSUMED THE ROLE AS
TECHNICAL SERVICES OFFICER AND THE UNIT CSM. HE ALSO DEPLOYED ON OP
NUNALIVUT IN 2015 AS THE TFSM. WHILE THERE WERE MANY CHALLENGES, IT WAS A REWARDING POSTING ALLOWING HIM TO SEE A PIECE OF CANADA THAT LESS THAN 2 OF THE POPULATION HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE. IN JULY 2016, MWO HICKEY WAS POSTED FOR THE LAST TIME TO HIS CURRENT POSITION AT MARPAC/JTFP HQ, ESQUIMALT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, AS THE
DOMESTIC LAND COORDINATOR WITHIN THE JOINT LOGISTICS OPERATIONS CENTRE (JLOC).
