McElveny, Gordon William, (Ret’d), CD, RCOC

McElvenyGordon William McElveny was born in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, on June 18, 1929 and passed away 15 August 2024 at age 94.   Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Eva McElveny (Stymiest).

Gordon met Mary while she was working at the Red Cross hospital in Plaster Rock. They married in 1949 and had two children, James and Monna-Leigh. His grandchildren Lauren and Brett, as well as great-grandchildren Russell, Charlie, and Chloe, were a great source of joy.

Gordon began his military career in 1954, with the militia in Plaster Rock and later moved to Fredericton to join the Regular Force Army. The family relocated to Ottawa in 1955, where Gordon served with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corp. Throughout his career, he had ‘non-accompanied’ postings to CFS Churchill, the Middle East, CFB Petawawa, CFB Gagetown, and CFS Alert. His only posting that his family was able to go with him, was when he joined The Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA), in Hemer, Germany from 1967-1970.

Over the years Gordon was heavily involved in community activities, youth sports, the Scouting movement and their church. Gordon and Mary both served as Elders at St Paul’s Eastern United Church. Upon retirement they traveled extensively, frequently returning to Europe and visiting with their families in NB.

In January 2022, Gordon moved to the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre, where he re-connected with old friends and colleagues.

Friends and relatives are invited to a Celebration of Gordon’s life at Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Dr., Ottawa, on Sunday, August 25, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
