Don passed peacefully, in great care and compassion in his last days, with family support 4 August 2019 in Kanata, Ontario
Born 16 July 1937 in New Glascow, NS, Don was married 57 years to the late Mary MacDonald (Busko), and is survived by his daughters Helen Anne MacDonald (Woodlawn, Ont.)(and grandson Christopher D.O. Hoffmann), and Barbara Dawn MacDonald (St. Catherine’s, Ont.).
Don was a Canadian Forces Warrant Officer RCAF (ret’d 30 yrs. service, 1960 – 1982) as an Air Movements Loadmaster and dedicated, in total, 35 years of service to the Federal Government.
Don was a Member, Order of Military Merit (M.M.M.), invested 1983, and also held the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the CF Special Service Medal (SSM) – NATO Continental Europe (’58 – ’59), Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medals (Congo, Cypress, Israel), the Canadian Forces Decoration (C.D.) and several U.N., international and commemorative medals.
Don was a member of the Logistics Movers Association, having served at 2 AMU (Trenton) and 3 AMU (Ottawa), and is commemorated at the RCAF Memorial Museum with an AD ASTRA (‘To the Stars’) Stone at Trenton.
He and Mary spent more than 30 years, at their camp on the Mississippi River, boating and fishing, and spent their recent winters in Florida together. He took his last trip there alone.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial for Don at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 593, Bell’s Corners, on Saturday, Aug. 10th, from 2 – 6 p.m. Remembrances thereafter may be at the Kanata Sports Club, on Fridays.
At his request, there will be no funeral. Don and Mary will be laid to rest, together, in Highland Park Cemetery in Carp, Ont. Donations in his name gratefully accepted for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
