BROWN, Michael (Mike) James, LCdr (Ret’d) CD, PLog, PMP, RCN-Sea Log, RCLS

BrownSuddenly at home in the early hours of July 2, 2025, Michael “Mike” James Brown passed away in his 76th year, leaving his family heartbroken.

Mike leaves behind his beloved wife and true love of 28 years, Diane (née Baker). He was the proud and devoted father of Grant Babin (Rie), Sean Brown (Emily), David Brown, and Christopher Roche (Maria); and a caring stepfather to Beth Ford and Tyler Ford (Anne Marie). Above all, Mike found his greatest joy in being a grandfather. He was “Grampy” to Andreya-Michelle and Caleb Brown, “Grandpa Mike” to Zach, Amelia, and Natalia Medl, and “Grandpa” to Jake Ford.  He will be deeply missed by his extended family, many dear friends, and former colleagues.

A man of complexity, intellect, and strong opinions, Mike was never one to back down from a good debate. He was passionate about the things that mattered to him, stubborn and strong-willed about politics and grammar and unapologetically himself in every room he entered. He loved the finer things in life—luxury, good food, good scotch and being spoiled just a little—and never missed a chance to indulge in what brought him joy. He also had a great love of photography, capturing life through his lens with curiosity and care.

Mike’s life was defined by service, leadership, and lifelong learning. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1968 and proudly served for over three decades, including during the Gulf War. Rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he retired in 2001 as a senior officer. During his distinguished career, Mike was awarded numerous service medals, including the Gulf and Kuwait Medal, the Special Service Medal (SSM), and the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD). Before retiring, Mike also served as a volunteer firefighter in both Enfield, Nova Scotia, and West Carleton, Ontario—yet another example of his steadfast commitment to helping others.

Education was something Mike took great pride in. He attended Royal Roads Military College (1979–1981), earned a BA in Economics and Commerce from the Royal Military College of Canada (Class of 1983), completed his MBA at Queen’s University (Class of 1985), and, later in life, studied Law at the University of Leicester (2012–2013). Never one to slow down, after leaving the military, Mike started his own consulting business and finally retired—again—in 2021.

Mike also earned his private pilot’s licence and relished the freedom and thrill of flying. He and Diane shared a love of travel and were avid cruisers, frequently sailing through the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, to Mexico, and to Bermuda.

Canada Day held a special place in Mike’s heart. For many years, he and Diane hosted a large backyard celebration at their home in Dunrobin, where family and friends would gather to enjoy good company, good food, and warm summer evenings. Mike loved these traditions and at the Canada Day party and other holidays, he always proclaimed that he was so happy to have everyone together in his open-hearted and loving way.

Mike’s absence leaves an unfillable space in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered for his bold spirit, his unapologetic authenticity, his love of good conversation (especially a lively debate), and the deep pride he took in his family and accomplishments. He lived life on his own terms—and he lived it fully.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at ALE – Amberwood Lounge & Eatery, 54 Springbrook Drive, Stittsville, Ontario. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather, share memories, and honour Mike’s life.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mike’s memory may be made to Canadian Centre for Men and Families, CCMF Ottawa Fund at https://menandfamilies.org/get-involved/donate/
